Pandemonium broke out at the weekend in Akumazi community, Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State when a 46-year-old woman, Chiekube Igbinosa, bit off her daughter’s ear during a brawl over a man.
Investigations by our correspondent showed that Igbinosa and her daughter, Mabel, were both having an affair with the same man, unknown to the mother.
The man at the centre of the love triangle, sources told our correspondent, is a trader who was allegedly deported from Spain a couple of years ago.
The elder Igbinosa reportedly started an affair with the man while her daughter, who just graduated from a university, was away in Rivers State where she was observing her one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps scheme.
It was learnt that Mabel returned to Asaba recently for a short vacation and started an affair with her mother’s lover. This was, however, unknown to her mother who is a Vice Principal in a government-owned secondary school.
But according to a neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity, Igbinosa got a whiff of her daughter’s illicit affair with her lover through a friend.
The development led Igbinosa to a place around camp 74 behind Ibori Golf Course within the Asaba campus of a Delta State -owned university said to be the love-nest of the man and her daughter.
The neighbour said, “When the mother got to know about this; she hatched a scheme aimed at catching the lovebirds red-handed. It did not take too long before she realised her objective.
“On Friday, Igbinosa went to the market at Mile 5 to buy fish. She ran into a friend who told her that her daughter and the lover boy had checked into a place around the vicinity. She later traced Mabel to the man’s house.
“Perceiving that her mother was around, Mabel quickly sneaked into a neighbour’s room. She was not, however, fast enough for her mother who dashed after her and descended on her with blows and slaps. She did not spare the man too. When the daughter could not endure the beating from her mother anymore, she fought back. That was when Igbinosa went berserk. She smashed a bottle on the ground and stabbed her daughter and the lover boy several times. That was after she had bitten a chunk off the girl’s ear.”
During the fight, frightened neighbours invited the Police and the trio was whisked away to a police station.
The Delta State Command Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the arrest of the woman and others, said investigation had begun on the matter, adding that the daughter had been taken to the hospital for treatment.
