lagos-based Igbo group, Igbo Progressive
Leaders’ Council, has commended Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for
appointing an Igbo man, Mr. Peter Okonji, as the General Manager, Lagos
Electricity Board.
The president of the group, Uche Dimgba,
who is also the Eze Ndigbo of Ikeja, said this during a news conference
in Lagos on Monday.
Dimgba said the appointment was commendable because it was one of Ambode’s first appointments.
He said the appointment had put to rest
the insinuations that the All Progressives Congress-led government would
marginalise Igbo and other non-indigenes due to some of the
disagreements that occurred during the April 11 governorship election.
He
said, “We are solidly behind Governor Ambode. We also thank him for
appointing an Igbo man, Mr. Peter Okonji, to head the state electricity
board in line with his promise of not marginalising any group or tribe.”
The group also thanked the state
government for coming to the aid of Mrs. Ruth Uche who was abandoned by
her husband after she gave birth to her third set of twins.
The group said by helping the Igbo woman, Ambode had shown that he would treat all the people of Lagos equally.
“We also appreciate the taking over of
the financial responsibility of an Igbo lady, Mrs. Ruth Uche, who gave
birth to another set of twins and was abandoned by her husband,” he
said.
Dimgba noted that the Igbo were used by some unscrupulous elements during the campaigns.
He, however, said that now that the elections are over, it was time to forget the past and move on.
Dimgba urged his kinsmen not to allow
themselves to be used by members of the opposition but to support Ambode
so that he could deliver the dividends of democracy.
He said, “We wish to categorically state
that electioneering is over and we are calling on all Igbo to desist
from anything that will cause trouble or misunderstanding in Lagos but
to support the good plans of the Lagos State Government.
“We, hereby, warn desperate politicians
who are hell-bent on dividing Igbo into hundreds of uncoordinated groups
for selfish goals, to desist from promoting negative propaganda
targeted at instilling fear and destabilising patriotic Igbo living in
Lagos.”
